Why drive for N2N?

Driving for N2N allows you to contribute to our St. George community when it’s convenient for you.   N2N drivers meet many interesting people. They enable riders to get out of their homes, see friends, schedule needed appointments, and continue leading an active life.

Who is eligible to drive for N2N?

Drivers must be at least 18 years of age, have a valid driver’s license with no significant violations, and agree to keep passenger information confidential.  N2N requires all drivers to complete the Volunteer Driver Registration Form and to read the following documents from the Driver Welcome Packet:

General Information for Drivers (which has more specific information on the ages of those eligible to drive), Driver Procedures, and Driver Emergency Procedures, which contain important information to be considered in volunteering for N2N.  You will have an orientation to the service before you begin to drive.

What kind of rides does N2N provide?

Most of the rides we provide are local.  We take riders to Pen Bay Medical Center for doctors’ appointments and into Rockland for grocery shopping and other errands.  We provide rides locally within St. George for Senior Luncheons, library and church events, voting, and visits with friends.  Most rides take 2 to 3 hours, door to door. Occasionally, we have requests for longer rides to Damariscotta or Portland for medical appointments.

Who are N2N’s riders?

Our riders are our neighbors.  Many are people who no longer drive.  Others may, temporarily, be without a car or license. You may drive lifelong residents of St. George who have great stories to tell. You may also provide rides for people, newly arrived “from away,” who are anxious to share their own stories, make new friends, and find ways to get involved in our community.

How does it work?

Drivers are not assigned rides. They select the rides they wish to provide depending on their own schedule and commitments. The dispatcher contacts all drivers by email with a specific ride request. If a driver chooses to take the ride, he or she responds to the request with “reply all”, indicating to other drivers that the ride request has been filled.  The dispatcher then gives the driver complete information about the requested ride and rider.  If a ride is expected to take several hours, one driver might take the passenger to the destination and another might do the return.

Do N2N drivers provide rides on evenings and weekends?

Traditionally, N2N provides rides Monday through Friday, 8 am to 6 pm. However, occasionally, our dispatcher may post a request for an evening or weekend ride. If a driver is available and willing to take the ride, we can meet that request.
